Lucca: The Heroic Marine Dog Who Lost Her Legs to Save Hundreds of Lives in Afghanistan

Juan Rodriguez, one of Lucca’s handlers, recalls the tense moments clearly. “The blast was immense, and I immediately feared for Lucca’s safety,” he remembers. “I hurried to her side and saw her struggle to stand. Quickly, I carried her to the shelter of nearby trees, applied a tourniquet to her wounded limb, and called for medical assistance.

Transported from Afghanistan for medical care, she underwent surgery and rehabilitation, astounding her caregivers with her rapid progress.
