Born to Serve: The Early Days of Lucca
Lucca, a German Shepherd-Belgian Malinois mix, was born with strength, intelligence, and energy—traits ideal for military service. She was trained as a specialized search dog in California, where she learned to detect explosives, navigate complex environments, and work under the intense pressure of combat.
Lucca was paired with skilled Marine handlers who developed a deep bond with her. Together, they patrolled some of the most dangerous territories, where one wrong step could be fatal. But Lucca never failed a mission. Her ability to identify hidden explosives made her a critical part of each unit she was assigned to.
She served two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan, leading patrols and detecting threats before they could harm her fellow Marines. Her senses were sharp, her focus unwavering—and her loyalty unmatched.
The Day That Changed Everything
On March 23, 2012, while on patrol in Afghanistan’s Helmand Province, Lucca was once again doing what she did best: protecting her team. She had already cleared several areas when she signaled the presence of an explosive device. Moments later, as she continued her search, a second IED detonated beneath her.
The blast severely injured Lucca, burning her chest and destroying one of her front legs. Yet, even in pain, she remained calm. She didn’t bark, cry, or panic. Her handler at the time, Corporal Juan Rodriguez, ran to her side and applied a tourniquet, saving her life.
Lucca was rushed to safety and evacuated for emergency medical care. While her leg could not be saved, her life was—and more importantly, no soldiers were harmed during the incident. Once again, Lucca had done her job with unwavering courage.
Recovery and Retirement
After her amputation, Lucca underwent extensive surgery and rehabilitation. She quickly adapted to life on three legs, showing the same resilience and strength that had defined her career. Her zest for life never faded. In fact, she learned to walk again with surprising ease and returned to normal activities—minus the combat.
After six years of military service, Lucca officially retired and was adopted by Corporal Rodriguez, her last handler. She enjoyed her retirement in comfort and love, often visiting schools and veterans’ groups to share her story and bring awareness to military working dogs.
Honoring a True Hero
Lucca’s heroic efforts did not go unnoticed. In 2016, she became the first U.S. Marine dog to receive the PDSA Dickin Medal, the highest honor for animals in military service—often referred to as the “animal Victoria Cross.” The ceremony was held in London, where Lucca proudly walked on three legs, wearing her medal as gracefully as any decorated veteran.
“Lucca’s ability to detect explosives and keep our troops safe was absolutely incredible,” said her handler. “She is more than a dog—she is a Marine.”
Her story was covered by international media and featured in documentaries, inspiring people across the world and highlighting the crucial, often overlooked role that military dogs play in combat zones.
A Legacy That Lives On
Lucca passed away peacefully in January 2018, surrounded by her family. But her legacy lives on—in the lives she saved, in the honors she received, and in the hearts of those who knew her story.
She’s more than a war dog. She’s a symbol of bravery, loyalty, and selflessness. She represents every working dog who risks it all without hesitation, driven by instinct, training, and love for their handlers.
